Today I've got a long story that I've been dying to share with the world, but I'm going <b>to start with the fantastic ending</b> and then share the rough beginning on another day. Because I'd much rather share the <i>fantasticness</i> with you today! <div>
<br /></div>
<div>
...so in conclusion, after several years of desiring an incredible studio space where I could create beautiful portraits for women, I have finally been able to partner with BLUSH studio. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
BLUSH is the premiere studio exclusively specializing in women's portraits, located in Dayton, Ohio. </div>
<div>
Their <i>super-chic</i> loft studio is a girls' dream, complete with exposed brick, vintage chandeliers and hot hot hot props! When I confirmed that I was able to start shooting at BLUSH, the first thing I had to do was choose a Cover Model to debut my marketing campaign for the BLUSH portrait sessions. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
I'm one of those women that is super lucky {<i>or not!</i>} to be surrounded by gorgeous friends that seem to wake up in the morning looking like they belong in a magazine. Basically, I had no lack of choices of women that would photograph wonderfully and would love a day of feeling like a supermodel. But I knew that I wanted <i>more</i> than a pretty face. <b>I wanted to showcase how the BLUSH experience is not only about how it makes you </b><i><b>look</b></i><b>, but also how it makes you <i>feel</i>. </b></div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Tracey was the first lady that I approached with the opportunity to be my BLUSH Cover Model and I knew she was the perfect choice. Her life has been a whirlwind of emotion for the past year or so and I really wanted her to have this opportunity but was hesitant that she would accept it. </div>
<div>
She's not the "<i>look at me" </i>kind of gal, but I was hoping that she would realize this was about so much more than just pictures. </div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
Here's Tracey's story in her own words:</div>
<div>
<br /></div>
<div>
<i>There are moments in life that you cannot prepare yourself for. Moments that test your faith, your courage, and your strength. In May of 2011, my life was turned upside down and I was diagnosed with Breast Cancer. I was faced with the toughest decision of my life and chose to have a Mastectomy in June 2011. I have since had 4 reconstruction surgeries. I could not have made it through this journey without the love and support of my husband, family and friends. I am a survivor.</i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>When presented with the opportunity of the "Blush Experience", I felt a bit anxious and nervous. I would not typically do something like this for myself, a mom of 3 and still feeling insecure about my reconstruction. Although still intrigued, I agreed to do it. When I arrived, my makeup was done by a professional makeup artist. Now that is a confidence builder! The studio was full of the most beautiful props and accessories ~ a girls dream. Once we began, I was still a little nervous, but was quickly put at ease by the professionalism and confidence building in the photographers around me. This was not just a "Blush Experience" but a "Personal Experience". </i></div>
<div>
<i><br /></i></div>
<div>
<i>I was extremely anxious to open my gallery, but when I saw my images, I was amazed. I couldn't believe it was me. Everything was perfect...the makeup, the lighting, the studio. Christy is an amazing artist. I didn't think I would really benefit from or even enjoy doing something like this, but it was an empowering experience. It was more than just posing for pictures, for me it was a way of saying "I'm Back!". Plus, every girl deserves to be a princess for a day.</i></div>
<div>

I am entering my first-ever photography contest and I'll tell ya why ~<br />
It's not for the usual reasons....<i>money</i>...<i>fame</i>...<i>fab prizes</i>....nope, none of that. <br />
I'm entering a contest because it offers the chance to have my images <b>critiqued</b> by some amazing photographers in front of the whole cyber world. <br />
<br />
<a href="http://www.chiccritiqueforum.com/" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Chic Critique</span></a>, which is an incredible source of knowledge for any level of photographer, is invading the photography world with <a href="http://chiccritiqueforum.com/photography-idol" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Photography Idol</span></a>. To sum it up...photographers submit one lone image (<i>boy that's hard</i>) that "totally represents our style and skill". Judges will then select 10 images to continue on to the next round based upon<b> image quality</b> and <b>memorable impact</b>. <br />
<br />
The top 10 contestants will then have to complete a series of photo challenges for several weeks. This means I would have to create unique concepts, find models, execute the shoots, edit images and produce<i> fantasticness</i> like never before. Very quickly. During my absolute busiest time of year.<br />
<br />
Bring it on.<br />
<br />
I had about 5 different shots in mind to submit but I decided on this one because I think it fit the "memorable impact" the best. It's kind of risky since the majority of the images being submitted are soft and beautiful...of baby girls in frilly skirts and lots of dreamy sun flare. Leave it to me to mix it up with a hard core black & white of boy behind bars! <br />

A lot of my clients, and other photographers, think that you need a <i>large, sprawling</i>, <i>fantastic</i> venue full of great scenery to get a good photo shoot. But since we don't have a lot of those within a reasonable driving distance to me, I've had to refine the art of finding just a few great spots and using those the best that I can. <br />
<br />
Actually, I'm the photographer that walks my models right past all the pretty flowers and architecture and I know they're behind me thinking "<i>What's she doing? I thought we were supposed to stand in front of flowers and say 'Cheese'!"</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
I've found that I really don't look for typical <i>scenery</i> at all when determining where to shoot. I look more for texture and color and if it has plenty of that I can work it out with just a small amount of space if needed. <br />
<i><br /></i><br />
I wanted to share with you one of my favorite little fields in a small park that I've been using quite a bit for my photo sessions. I'm finding that every few weeks the texture of the field changes which creates all new opportunities for me to the unique textures and colors that are within it. <br />
<br />
Here's some of the portraits I've shot over the last year that shows how one small field, hidden in the back of a playground park, can be utilized for a variety of different looks.<br />

So I'm going thru my photos from a session with my one of my favorite models ever, Little Ms. Alexis, when I come to this image...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAJHunsbQXD0SOfCvIfXAMLckSvhgosWDdI4nI9siUrvK1foU4PeR0kb1J1h15TrD8YGmTjZDT-NehgtXOO4_BpEUh3oJ2yyZDw-O2NhMBlzjKS8r9X543ew8yddv5aiCTqZMRBqxCE-Ql/s1600/fb-alexis-trash-photo.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjAJHunsbQXD0SOfCvIfXAMLckSvhgosWDdI4nI9siUrvK1foU4PeR0kb1J1h15TrD8YGmTjZDT-NehgtXOO4_BpEUh3oJ2yyZDw-O2NhMBlzjKS8r9X543ew8yddv5aiCTqZMRBqxCE-Ql/s640/fb-alexis-trash-photo.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
...and I have to make the decision "<i>Do I trash this photo or save it?</i>".</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
There's so many obvious flaws...the crop is so wrong...the white balance is awful...the exposure pretty much stinks. This SOOC image will definitely<i> NOT</i> be in an upcoming blog about "<i>getting it right in camera</i>"! It was actually a test shot when I was testing the lighting to photograph her baby sister and I told her all she had to do was sit there:)</div>
<br />
Also, I already had so many images that I knew were going to be fabulous. <br />
<i>What would you do? Would you save it or trash it?</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
Despite all the flaws, the expression on this photo just captivated me and I knew I <b>had</b> to save it.<br />
<br />
Of course the first thing I did, since I'm a <i>cropping maniac</i>, was crop in Lightroom to make sure there was no mistake that this portrait was all about that <b>expression</b><i>. </i>Here's my crop...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSOEFT9cHlz0Dd5eagF5X4SeELQAX2nihiWsFnngmIIlB9qM-tSwBM5wMIL9DCAy5Jwf2ZihirdLYrfdQ9UyYgJ1fgbsw7L2RA5hjOZ5Jra1U4XvzdRSYfzSYzhfToe3Y4AZIJtsjbUdUr/s1600/Screen+Shot+2012-06-05+at+12.55.51+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="443" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSOEFT9cHlz0Dd5eagF5X4SeELQAX2nihiWsFnngmIIlB9qM-tSwBM5wMIL9DCAy5Jwf2ZihirdLYrfdQ9UyYgJ1fgbsw7L2RA5hjOZ5Jra1U4XvzdRSYfzSYzhfToe3Y4AZIJtsjbUdUr/s640/Screen+Shot+2012-06-05+at+12.55.51+PM.png" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<br />
Then I had to get rid of her sunburned cheeks but I didn't want to lose the detail of all those great freckles so I did a few curves adjustments then decided to a very light black and white photo. I used a whole <i>mish mash</i> of Florabella actions and finally came up with a recipe I liked. Here's a comparison shot of the SOOC and my final portrait...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp3UvTA5poFhnTOU1yz2hqqti26sOSxYeQQzu5KlKtB4lmr_DzC8-KPDpQmQ8sJ6crvcYZnFlPWgBx6hOU5cgfvkQQKwdASdG4BMJze_moPnrwcHPP72c9pe8cciyRd0KEga75uP-NYc6v/s1600/fb-alexis-before-after.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="302" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgp3UvTA5poFhnTOU1yz2hqqti26sOSxYeQQzu5KlKtB4lmr_DzC8-KPDpQmQ8sJ6crvcYZnFlPWgBx6hOU5cgfvkQQKwdASdG4BMJze_moPnrwcHPP72c9pe8cciyRd0KEga75uP-NYc6v/s640/fb-alexis-before-after.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
<i><br /></i><br />
And here's the final image in all it's glory~<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibVZ7T5oqyOfl-Xvb-0tRhmBgpd__RrkqX-w5arerZ_zstRoRbtdDnldvi0BchFIP7Z-YqttqxtiMct2DNic7_PPRw1yYs7AQ-kji2w7g8qloR15hILfcqj0uO86Ld4Sivjfko4H6TjuKU/s1600/sisters+012.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEibVZ7T5oqyOfl-Xvb-0tRhmBgpd__RrkqX-w5arerZ_zstRoRbtdDnldvi0BchFIP7Z-YqttqxtiMct2DNic7_PPRw1yYs7AQ-kji2w7g8qloR15hILfcqj0uO86Ld4Sivjfko4H6TjuKU/s640/sisters+012.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<br />
I pretty much luv it. <br />
<br />
So tell me....<i><b>do you think it was worth saving? </b></i><br />
<i><b><br /></b></i><br />

A lot of photographers like to advertise how they <i>never pose their clients</i> and all their photography sessions are <i>natural</i>. Well that's all great for them but I think one of the advantages I can offer my client is that my sessions are <i>very very</i> posed!<br />
<br />
My clients are paying me to make them look their <b>absolute best</b> and typically that just doesn't happen naturally. It's a scary thing to be set in front of a camera and it's even scarier when you feel <i>abandoned</i> in front of it. So many of my clients have said something like "<i>Just tell me what to do</i>." before we even begin the session. Luckily I assure them quickly that I'll be in control the entire time and let them know exactly how to behave to achieve the most flattering looks.<br />
<br />
I've learned thru the years that posing my clients actually takes a lot of<b> skill</b> and <b>learning</b>! When I'm at a session there are a million things pulsing thru my brain at once....I'm concentrating on my lighting, my camera settings, the background...but then I have to set aside all those things and guide my client into a flattering pose that accentuates all the <i>good stuff</i>, and diminishes all the <i>not-so-good</i> stuff. And I have to do this in a simple, easy-to-understand way so the client doesn't get confused and feel like they're doing something wrong...or worse, feel like they look stupid on camera! <br />
<br />
The biggest trick to posing though is making it look <i>unposed</i> on camera. After I finally get all the <i>hands </i>and <i>arms</i> and <i>hips</i> and <i>everything else</i> just where I want it, I have to get them to look fantastic and NOT self conscious right before I make that click. I've learned so many great tips for achieving that so I wanted to share one that I use quite often for close-ups. I call it the "<i><b>Can you breathe thru your mouth?</b></i>" tip. <br />
Yes, I'm quite technical:)<br />
<br />
I love to get great, dramatic close-ups of my models which usually means their mouths are closed with their lips together. But sometimes that look can come across as too stiff or without any personality. So I'll keep my model in the exact same pose but I'll ask them "<i>Can you breathe thru your mouth?</i>"<br />
<br />
Almost every single time I ask that my model will open their lips just the slightest bit and their expression changes completely. That's when I'll shoot.<br />
<br />
I did it here...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvms-SUXv29iDlQr41ebtCQDDdGWiO4Yhyphenhyphen5jVq_giYforcNV_ubpZvucSyzCrFiW9V1qF0Mrzr54hnGKzpG0_sv7S0SdG3IngIKudH2T4_9e8vUCHenM2sJsy0Da5McCwVbIFK5pWk-kee/s1600/kc+horizontal+020.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="426" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjvms-SUXv29iDlQr41ebtCQDDdGWiO4Yhyphenhyphen5jVq_giYforcNV_ubpZvucSyzCrFiW9V1qF0Mrzr54hnGKzpG0_sv7S0SdG3IngIKudH2T4_9e8vUCHenM2sJsy0Da5McCwVbIFK5pWk-kee/s640/kc+horizontal+020.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
And here...</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWY9mNY8huZ7qgPp5G3AtT1BWRO6M7NKbox6NzKxzZ_QssOd3WuEHV8AOEiUcuvvnrfGN2NNORq7v0lCrXuzQXlbFm4NwFB1cYCG102KKOo2Z0H6efwXA4_K3BBsY08DmiyC40HwPZjBQ2/s1600/as+vert003.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="640" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgWY9mNY8huZ7qgPp5G3AtT1BWRO6M7NKbox6NzKxzZ_QssOd3WuEHV8AOEiUcuvvnrfGN2NNORq7v0lCrXuzQXlbFm4NwFB1cYCG102KKOo2Z0H6efwXA4_K3BBsY08DmiyC40HwPZjBQ2/s640/as+vert003.jpg" width="424" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's not that it always produces a<i> better</i> photo or expression, just a <i>different</i> one. Which means that both myself and the client have more options. <i>I like options.</i></div>

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's a few side-by-side comparisons of portraits taken with the closed mouths and then 2 seconds later after I've asked her to breathe thru her mouth. Thanks to the lovely Shelby for being my model here...</div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I've realized that I've never really <i>blogged</i> my sessions like most normal photographers do. I don't do a lot of things that normal photographers do but I've decided I should really take advantage of this internet thing to show off the fabulous people that I've gotten to know thru photography. And I'd like to start with Abbi.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I met Abbi and her parents and sister a few years ago and her mom and I became instant friends when I worked with her for a day. I was thrilled when I found out Abbi was interested in pursuing photography and she was the perfect choice for a summer assistant. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><i>Abbi is the girl that every mother hopes her daughter will grow up to be</i>. That was my very first impression of Abbi after spending just a few hours with her. </span><br />

One week before her Senior shoot was scheduled Abbi's father died at their home, very unexpectedly from a heart attack. <i>"I wish I could take better photos. I really just need to buy a better camera."</i><br />
<br />
I hear that comment all the time. I've even said it myself. And I just happen to have a little story that goes along with it...<br />
<br />
Back in 2010 when I was spending hours and hours trying to decide which camera to <a href="http://way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2010/09/my-new-love.html" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">upgrade</span></a> to, my hubby asked me a question that I thought was pretty funny. It went something like this...<br />
<br />
<i>"Why do you need a better camera if all you do is mess up your pictures anyway?"</i><br />
<br />
I've had to convince myself that question was asked in pure love:) <br />
But I'm pretty sure he was talking about my photos like this one...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151022117895523.776566.375410850522&type=3&l=cf0f26534e" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;" target="_blank"><img border="0" height="424" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEi18MQ_ooCJuiQujCJQ1Fjfd9mWtzp5vfcaXArvzAQkyF9pov3hZ-1ADWg9TvHzWUbD_G2TEpuLLp_kesJEid2fyHOoSZ1vxNBX1PZ0NmBJIuzPc6cD0kDVPLSuFKTofm1FKOGmjHf2KFaj/s640/Matthew+R+horizontal017.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
His question made me laugh but I also had to think of a pretty good answer of exactly <i>why</i> I needed a better camera.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
It's been said a million times that "<i>better equipment does not make you a better photographer</i>", but a good photographer can absolutely do wonderful things when given better equipment. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
The camera and lenses I was using at the time were actually pretty decent considering they were non-pro models. But I knew there was <i>better</i> and I was getting so frustrated with the slow focus on my lenses. I felt that I was missing so many great expressions because my lens just wasn't fast enough to capture the exact moment. And the color quality just wasn't as smooth as I was wanting. I'm not trying to bash my pentax camera, just stating that even though I was using all my buttons and options to their fullest extent, I still wasn't getting the quality that I was wanting in my images. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
But why did I need better quality in my images if all I do is <i>mess them up</i>? Because I wanted to start with the absolute best image so that my options are open to do whatever I want with it. <b>There's just no substitute for starting with the best image possible. </b></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So I needed <a href="http://way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2011/03/wonderful-world-of-apertures.html" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><i>wider</i> <i>apertures</i></span></a> to get better bokeh and more creative control...I needed <i>higher ISO options</i> to get better exposure in low light...I needed <i>faster focusing</i> on my lenses so I wasn't wasting time. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Here's an example of a 2 similar photos: the one on the left was a "behind the scenes" shot taken by my assistant using my old pentax. The one on the right was taken by me within a few minutes using the camera I upgraded to, a Nikon d300s. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">
<a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMKMsQQvwrMQaRZ6dhr4dEcJGGd26dFE1xvUkoCz-ACId8ggG5v4m5PP6sgg9z_s_2Uey1VIjD_vSEoHqR4XNG27VlWdCDlSESIBNETXXyEmaYoq2I4XdPB331mdO4y8QREm_lX9CLFZgg/s1600/416+blog+2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="440" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhMKMsQQvwrMQaRZ6dhr4dEcJGGd26dFE1xvUkoCz-ACId8ggG5v4m5PP6sgg9z_s_2Uey1VIjD_vSEoHqR4XNG27VlWdCDlSESIBNETXXyEmaYoq2I4XdPB331mdO4y8QREm_lX9CLFZgg/s640/416+blog+2.jpg" width="640" /></a></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
These are both SOOC, no editing. I set both the cameras before the shoot at as close to the same settings as I could. The widest aperture on the lens for the left photo though was 3.5. I was able to use an aperture of 2.8 for the photo on the right. Can you tell the difference in <i>detail</i>, <i>clarity</i> and <i>overall appeal </i>of the 2 photos? I used a 50mm 1.4 lens on the Nikon. And when you're working with kiddos this young, a lens that can focus superfast is worth every penny!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
So what's my answer to the age-old question of "<i>Should I buy a better camera?</i>" </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Yes and No.</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
My answer is <i>NO</i> if right now you're not using all the buttons, settings and options on your current camera. If you haven't learned how to operate the one you have chances are you won't learn how to operate a new one with more intimidating options. Plus if you do some more research about what you currently own, you may realize you just need to change some settings. Maybe you just need to take a <a href="http://inspiredbychristy.com/?splash=1#/workshop-details/1" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">workshop</span></a> and learn how to use it better? <span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><i>(I just happen to know where you can find a great one)</i></span> Or you may just need to buy a different lens? Lenses have as much, or sometimes <i>more</i>, to do with your image quality than your camera. And if you don't know why lenses are so important then I suggest you research and find out if you're using lenses that aren't a good match with your style of photography. You could save money by upgrading your lenses rather than your camera body and then you'll thank me!</div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
I would definitely answer <i>YES</i> to that question though if you've outgrown your current camera. That means if you know what you're missing on your current camera, <i>if you know what it can't do</i>, then you're probably ready for an upgrade. When you're shooting in manual and adjusting your lenses accordingly but you still aren't getting the quality you're wanting then you're probably ready to have some fun and go camera shopping! </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Keep in mind that there<i> is</i> a downside to improving your equipment...I can no longer blame bad photos on my camera! </div>
</div>way outnumberedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11456734293720440275noreply@blogger.com0tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-471159794854482805.post-12416939745260202642012-04-12T14:21:00.002-04:002012-04-12T16:23:46.663-04:00Why I'm A Sucker For A Good Template<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on">
I mentioned in yesterday's<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"> <a href="http://way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2012/04/im-back.html" target="_blank"><i>mish-mash </i>of a post</a> </span>that I'm a sucker for a good template. <br />
I bought quite a few last fall whenever a designer I liked would have a sale or coupon code, but like any good sale, it still adds up. <br />
<br />
But the longer I do this business thing the more I'm a believer that great templates are <i>essential</i> to me. I've learned the complicated way over the past 2 years that the <i>end result</i> of the photographs, the <b>products</b>, are where I'm able to make money and please my clients. And let me tell ya folks, there's no shortage of fantastic products available! <br />
<br />
I <i>really really really</i> stink at graphic design but I know exactly the design and style I like to showcase my images. This is where the templates come in....I can buy beautiful templates for albums, cards, frames and everything else to create a very unique and eye-catching product that my client will love. <br />
<br />
Here's some examples for you...this is a 4x8 Accordion album which is one of my absolute favorite new products I just started offering. I bought this template...<br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;">

Since I'm kinda decent at working in Photoshop Elements I can alter all the <i>text</i>, <i>colors</i>, <i>frames</i> and pretty much rig all these templates up to fit what I need. That way they're truly unique to the images that I'm creating them for and each client gets the product thats perfect for them. </div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
Anyway, templates have become a slight obsession and I've shown ample proof as to why I love them. What about you...are you a template junkie?</div>

And since I want everyone to have the guilty habit I do of splurging on great templates, here's a few of my favorite sites for designs....Enjoy~</div>

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I'm baaaaaack! And I'm better than ever.</span><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">{well, that last part remains to be seen, but haven't you always wanted to say that?}</span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">In case you were wondering if I had fallen off the face of the earth, I haven't. Last fall I had the great fortune to actually start booking more clients...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">which meant I spent more time shooting </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and editing</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and meeting</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and designing</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and learning</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and emailing</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and facebooking</span><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and and and</span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">You get the picture. Surprisingly enough I realized that with a short 24 hours in a day I am only capable of doing <i>so much</i>. And with 4 children who want to eat every single day and demand clean underwear at least twice a week, something had to give. So I stepped away from my beloved blogging to try and maintain a grasp on the chaos I still had left. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But the blogging gal inside of me never shut down. Every time I would <i>learn something new</i> or make an <i>epic fail</i> or try a fantastic <i>new photo product</i> I would be thinking in my brain about how I would love to share my thoughts with the world. So here I am back in the blogging world with an overload of random thoughts spilling onto the page. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I warn you, it may get messy.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I've experienced sooooo much since last fall in photography and business and everything in between and I just can't wait to share it with you. Every experience is just swirling around in my brain and I can't quite seem to sort it all out yet. <i>You ever get like that?</i></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">For instance, a few things I've learned over the past months:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">~ Facebook is an evil necessity to me. <i>Necessity</i> because it's the only place I can reach tons of people with my photography for free. <i>Evil</i> because it breeds insecurity and doubt when browsing other photography pages and comparing to my own work. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">~ Getting the shot right "in camera" beats fixing in photoshop any day. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">~ I'm a sucker for templates. I stink at graphic design so I bought a ton of templates last year to have plenty of options for products. I need to control myself. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">~ Even though I stink at design, I wish I could create new marketing products every day. I love the creative outlet it provides and I really love showing off all the awesome people I get to photograph. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">~ Shooting with the end result in mind has completely changed my photography habits.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I'll talk more about all those things later. I hope you stick around for it. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">One thing that hasn't changed...I still love textures. Always and forever.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Here's a lovely B&A with 2 lovely <a href="http://www.facebook.com/media/set/?set=a.10151317341890523.818335.375410850522&type=3&l=d8160cfa55" target="_blank"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">sisters/singers</span></a>, showing how I enhanced their photo with just a few lovely textures. <span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Back in the olden days when I knew nothing about photography...like, a few months ago, I used to think that shutter speed was only important when shooting things like sports or at night. But I'm here to tell ya, I was wrong.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Shutter Speed</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> is just as crucial to great exposure as</span><a href="http://www.way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2011/03/wonderful-world-of-apertures.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> Aperture</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> and ISO. </span><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">My very basic definition of Shutter Speed is how long your shutter is open, which determines how much light is let into your photo.</span></b><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> longer it's open</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">, the more light that comes in, the</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> lighter </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">your photograph.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">shorter it's open</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">, the less light that comes in, the </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">darker</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> your photograph.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The number values with shutter speed are the amounts per second your shutter is open...250th of a second...800th of a second...and so on. When I'm trying to decide if I want to let in a little light or a lot of light I get confused sometimes when I'm thinking in numbers. But I never get confused when I'm thinking of food so I do this little trick...I ask myself</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">"</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Do I want a piece of a pie that's cut into 250 pieces or a piece of a pie that's cut into 800 pieces?" </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Obviously the pieces of a pie cut into 250 pieces are going to be </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">larger </span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">than if it's been cut into 800 pieces...</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">get it</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">? </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So if I want a lot of light I choose 250...if I want a little light I choose 800...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That's way too much math for me so here's a few photos to show how changing your shutter speed, and nothing else, can dramatically alter your portraits.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The glamourous shooting location for this little lesson is the shed in my backyard!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The sun was way too bright to shoot in so the shed was providing a great spot of open shade.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I shot with my back to the sun so my model could face the light source, which gives great catchlights</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">in the eyes, but still be evenly lit without harsh shadows. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">If you look at the pavers you can see very clearly the line of shade and sun. There wasn't a ton of room but I just needed some close ups so it was perfect.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br /></span><br />

I like to get all the fun poses with my Seniors but it's great to get a little bit <i>Glam</i> too with the girls!<br />
<br />
Here's a portrait from a recent session that I just thought was lovely and it was very easy to edit.<br />
<br />
First, I opened up my image in my brand new Lightroom 3!! I've just started working with this program and it's quickly becoming part of my regular workflow. The white balance adjustment is wonderful but so far my <i>absolute favorite</i> tool is the CROP tool! It Rocks! .<i>..you know I love me some good cropping ~</i><br />
<i><br /></i><br />
I would never have been able to figure out this program though near as quickly if I hadn't taken <a href="http://www.texaschicksblogsandpics.com/lightroom-classes-online/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Erin's online LR classes</span></a>...they were incredible! I learned in 2 nights what I'm sure it would have taken me months to figure out. Run quickly and sign up for those classes!<br />
<br />
I adjusted the white balance in LR on my original photo...<br />

<br /></div>
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">
<br /></div>
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: #333333; font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif; font-size: 17px; line-height: 26px;">Then I added a Jessica Drossin texture at about 65% to add some dimension to the background. But I didn't want it on my girl at all so I lassoed around her entire body and chose Filter - Blur - Gaussian Blur to keep the coloring but blur the texture on her skin. The coloring was a little too much still so I erased lightly part of the texture off completely...that's what the gray part is on the layer mask:</span><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Actually, it really wasn't that hard of a decision. My </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">oldie but goodie </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Photoshop Elements 6 is still doing a fabulous job but I was wanting something with more of an organizer. And I wanted a little more control over the basic editing processes like white balance, clarity, and all the other </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">practical stuff</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. Plus after seeing that a whole slew of photographers I admire use LR3 as their beginning editor it was a no-brainer to go </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">ahead and upgrade from Elements. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I actually got a *fantastic* deal on the upgrade from Amazon.com!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">If you have any Adobe products </span><b><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">make sure you register them</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">and you will get discount offers all the time </span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">from Amazon and Adobe to upgrade! </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So a few days after I got the disc I installed all the software, opened it up and was ready to </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Jump....Right...In! </span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">NOT!! </span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Within seconds I realized that unlike Photoshop and Elements, which have the same interface, Lightroom and Photoshop look nothing alike. <i> Yikes</i>. Which is exactly why I headed over to </span><a href="http://www.texaschicksblogsandpics.com/lightroom-classes-online/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Texas Chicks Blogs & Pics</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> and signed up for her Lightroom online classes. </span><br />

</span><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Of course you do!</span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's because I used my </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">selective focus</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> option that you can clearly see what I want you to focus on, and everything else is blurred. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Selective Focus</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> has rocked my world, and it'll rock yours too when you start using it. I'm amazed at how many of my friends have these great cameras but have no idea this feature exists. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Here's my very </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">non-technical, easy explainable</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> definition of Selective Focus:</span><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Selective Focus lets you pinpoint the exact spot you want the focus of your photo to be, anywhere in the </span></b><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">frame. </span></b><br />
<b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></b><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Most digital cameras (not point & shoots, just ones with interchangeable lenses) have an area on the back</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">of the camera that lets you choose where to put the focus of your camera. You can usually choose between </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Center Focus</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">, </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Area Focus</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> and </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Single Point Focus</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. The default is usually Center Focus and most people never move that dial because they don't know what the other options do. That's ok if you're one of those people, I was too, not too long ago! But after I read my manual {</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">hint hint hint</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">} I realized I had so many more creative options open to me by using the Single Point Focus. </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Who Knew????</span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Here's what my Nikon camera looks like when I've selected the Single Focus option:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNso9KFHKjUpGvyVMFfW19rnZ829AAnqyHRrc3DhNQDUuMdSStGHBvGBEfB9G6M_kr_wDQyl5k3sxDRdb3M0IMRVGQTQQkNF4YlYIDt7z7Ldw9amu6Hql4OpZQ1P2xWxgC2blTkYUg4rt/s1600/selective+focus+point.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgrNso9KFHKjUpGvyVMFfW19rnZ829AAnqyHRrc3DhNQDUuMdSStGHBvGBEfB9G6M_kr_wDQyl5k3sxDRdb3M0IMRVGQTQQkNF4YlYIDt7z7Ldw9amu6Hql4OpZQ1P2xWxgC2blTkYUg4rt/s1600/selective+focus+point.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Now I can move my </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">little red focus indicator</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> around in my viewfinder to the exact place I want my focus to be. I just use the little round dial on the back and with my thumb I move it up or down, side to side. I think Canon's have a joystick? Either way, it's very simple to move and after doing it a few times you won't even have to think about it, it will be second nature.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Take a look at these lovely ladies...they stayed in the same spot and I stayed in the same spot for both of these shots...all I did was move my focal point from one girl to the next.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />

</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">See how easy that is? I typically compose my shot first and then I'll move my focal point to where I want it. </span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Although I use Selective Focus for almost all my portraits, it's not a necessity for </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">every</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> photo. When you're doing a large, serious group photo {</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">hahaha</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">} and you're wanting to make sure most of the scene is in focus, I usually use my Center Focus, like for this shot:</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaF6OhtLoCsK8ULKD0BssGIPsui3lDQtlSCnpqhF1dI3USxjpYOkXk4FHM8Q1IK_MUUU3eIh2thhFOp6uMIZaaAtkYtsnJCwoXj7TIjFwc0aVvyq2QOhRid2fhgRDNw4QHCI-9OcJoJFks/s1600/IMGP6231.JPG" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" height="428" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgaF6OhtLoCsK8ULKD0BssGIPsui3lDQtlSCnpqhF1dI3USxjpYOkXk4FHM8Q1IK_MUUU3eIh2thhFOp6uMIZaaAtkYtsnJCwoXj7TIjFwc0aVvyq2QOhRid2fhgRDNw4QHCI-9OcJoJFks/s640/IMGP6231.JPG" width="640" /></span></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">You may recall that a few weeks ago I did a photo session with newborn </span><a href="http://www.way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2011/04/behind-scenes-newborn-baby-zara.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Baby Zara</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">. Before I even started shooting I had a vision for </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">*dreamy* *creamy*</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> photos showcasing that super sweet newborn skin. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But if you've ever photographed newborns, you know that typically their skin is blotchy and usually have strong yellow or red undertones. Here's how I edited this newborn skin to achieve a creamy, consistent look to it:</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">1. I opened my original photo in Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLWh1CQwLhVBm9cBGqbeT86lAGJwKCxPXdR3gLHhVHCHZCMNwkMfqqkqXf08Q49FUmS1W9MWac05GXuPPBlNyx_FMQlb-r11Uyk-Q8AHsNixzZTLJlushFYyDgNkEStm3XuX0ZYbkxt3zJ/s1600/original-newborn-1.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgLWh1CQwLhVBm9cBGqbeT86lAGJwKCxPXdR3gLHhVHCHZCMNwkMfqqkqXf08Q49FUmS1W9MWac05GXuPPBlNyx_FMQlb-r11Uyk-Q8AHsNixzZTLJlushFYyDgNkEStm3XuX0ZYbkxt3zJ/s1600/original-newborn-1.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Honestly her skin looks pretty darned good for a newborn but I wanted a much creamier look. I started by </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">overexposing</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> all the images just a tad </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">in-camera</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> which I prefer for making skin look better and hiding flaws.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Next I cropped the photo in just a little tighter. And although I'm singing the praises of textures today, I did use one layer of an action on these images! I run </span><a href="http://www.thecoffeeshopblog.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Coffeeshop Baby Powder Room</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">on *almost* every portrait to soften the skin, but you can also use a Gaussian Blur filter to achieve the same results. I ran the Smooth Skin layer at 14% for just the tiniest bit of softening.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Then I decided I want to get rid of that wrinkle in the background so I used the color picker to choose the pink color from the blanket to paint over the wrinkles.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG-_MGMOGnzpKXorTQDnH7eVjyrPqPp_EuDMjheRgyaw_tf2N_JCmr6wJYtK2AFFrZjP1xvfnlxWRQXXHDPEKjdyimtclLnbooB5dN4gYBgyVjmVx3gYAGflzLPKivXpe804OJkunDkhrA/s1600/color+picker.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgG-_MGMOGnzpKXorTQDnH7eVjyrPqPp_EuDMjheRgyaw_tf2N_JCmr6wJYtK2AFFrZjP1xvfnlxWRQXXHDPEKjdyimtclLnbooB5dN4gYBgyVjmVx3gYAGflzLPKivXpe804OJkunDkhrA/s1600/color+picker.png" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Check out the left corner where I just started "painting" over the wrinkles with the solid color.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgaJjvWxZEZdE4WdE_3nxpXwikdNInmSI-kqLus7fsTAMcd6ETPswH-uz_Lk2oTWrroPrcJaMAnbUWCpkHODuBazCsFVxHEFSoI_k4Rjc2Zb1x9Oa5EPfRG3iluOBG5VYKGZvNwLqQT-6E/s1600/clone+background.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhgaJjvWxZEZdE4WdE_3nxpXwikdNInmSI-kqLus7fsTAMcd6ETPswH-uz_Lk2oTWrroPrcJaMAnbUWCpkHODuBazCsFVxHEFSoI_k4Rjc2Zb1x9Oa5EPfRG3iluOBG5VYKGZvNwLqQT-6E/s1600/clone+background.png" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Next I selected a soft grungy texture {Favorite Apron from Coffeeshop} with a bit of a purple/pink tone to it and placed it over my photo. I used the Overlay option at 40%.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoSl9z4Wy8je4Ayyron-no3DgkcsLrMTBErkx-flTpKoY8UH9FSJ3-a6gjemLw3i5ZdCcC3c6gP_xYXIdTCRkfzMZtiuP3yJ064xFl5XRTfRp66KveIRKZgNnMuhLgt1oCIqoNZxP9YbZW/s1600/adding+texture.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhoSl9z4Wy8je4Ayyron-no3DgkcsLrMTBErkx-flTpKoY8UH9FSJ3-a6gjemLw3i5ZdCcC3c6gP_xYXIdTCRkfzMZtiuP3yJ064xFl5XRTfRp66KveIRKZgNnMuhLgt1oCIqoNZxP9YbZW/s1600/adding+texture.png" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Just by adding this soft texture it tremendously evened out the skin tones and added that </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">dreamy</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> look I was wanting to convey. But I wasn't quite done.....the skin still had a little too much red in it so I duplicated the layer {after flattening} and went to </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Adjust Color - Adjust Hue/Saturation then chose the Reds channel and moved the slider to a +9. </span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">This took down the red quite a bit and got the skin right where I wanted it. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj8hR_N0dWTr-WT8kF-WBTOBps8eVbstPFYb9F0ZMEP1tfRuwLnhmjb8zlJSc-A0IE0O3jRFMxhZN332xPE5t3fkJnFcRkWofMzptZGwXTtzrt87bUJIrtb2jkvboLe9EcSAteKBOPDm8F/s1600/hue+adjustment+layer.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgj8hR_N0dWTr-WT8kF-WBTOBps8eVbstPFYb9F0ZMEP1tfRuwLnhmjb8zlJSc-A0IE0O3jRFMxhZN332xPE5t3fkJnFcRkWofMzptZGwXTtzrt87bUJIrtb2jkvboLe9EcSAteKBOPDm8F/s1600/hue+adjustment+layer.png" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Here's my final:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVmF5zusKJg2vR9oi5shzVrxmRwY_DD2mIzAYoefMCNSBx8MmYnX6cysoMbJHNF9AsaN7VKG4_kz9OEG5SwZ8h6C8nJLHaRUiTcayLhtFDAUJAy8jXRdTFiY5eJ2kiZ-yYS5vCgqd_Hth-/s1600/baby+zara+horizontal006.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgVmF5zusKJg2vR9oi5shzVrxmRwY_DD2mIzAYoefMCNSBx8MmYnX6cysoMbJHNF9AsaN7VKG4_kz9OEG5SwZ8h6C8nJLHaRUiTcayLhtFDAUJAy8jXRdTFiY5eJ2kiZ-yYS5vCgqd_Hth-/s1600/baby+zara+horizontal006.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">And here's another B&A using these same steps:</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh0bPD7DKrIk2r_ndSRWvF3s7NriyfpwB09becjKP2JV_LOnxzAmWOcdn16EJy3Mg8JDAHhL_IiTVeNUdE7HG1mm6ugw6twz2pwB6Ckq7awbzatsB_ETMHgDQC9px-4-ejeGyf9ivXSepa/s1600/original-newborn-2.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEhh0bPD7DKrIk2r_ndSRWvF3s7NriyfpwB09becjKP2JV_LOnxzAmWOcdn16EJy3Mg8JDAHhL_IiTVeNUdE7HG1mm6ugw6twz2pwB6Ckq7awbzatsB_ETMHgDQC9px-4-ejeGyf9ivXSepa/s1600/original-newborn-2.jpg" /></span></a></div><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzVIs3xz-Bd8LpGZtprp8zoPY9ZG3cqaSFCujDcWNW2iu39ATVAZClefOGO7C5zdBO9bJpDloanwz-qgtKeBXCqU4nkv48aL5fjVSJgpcidQQY-jrJttSf2KFcrKsu1Q4rxiYmBAkILZah/s1600/baby+zara+horizontal001.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgzVIs3xz-Bd8LpGZtprp8zoPY9ZG3cqaSFCujDcWNW2iu39ATVAZClefOGO7C5zdBO9bJpDloanwz-qgtKeBXCqU4nkv48aL5fjVSJgpcidQQY-jrJttSf2KFcrKsu1Q4rxiYmBAkILZah/s1600/baby+zara+horizontal001.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's So Easy!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So give your textures a try the next time you're in need of some color correction! You don't always need an arsenal full of actions to get</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> Fabulous</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> images!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">And I'd love to hear how you use textures for editing other than the usual stuff....</span><b><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Share Your Wisdom!</span></i></b><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">It's a quick and easy alternative to building your own videos. I enjoy making videos in iMovie, which is </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">fabulous</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">, but I always struggle with adding the music. I don't listen to music a lot and I don't have a library full of selections to add to my videos so that was the defining choice for me to choose Animoto. They have a large library of music to choose from and if you have the Pro account the selection increases quite a bit. No worries about violating copyright and all that legality stuff~</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I have been wanting to incorporate video with my photo sessions for a while so I've been experimenting with </span><a href="http://animoto.com/?ref=a_wmjuplzo"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Animoto</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> again recently. Here's a look at The Story of Zara that I created for my friend Sharon and her sweet baby girl. I've titled my videos </span><b><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-style: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Art In Motion</span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-weight: normal;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">....because, that's exactly what it is!</span></span></i></b><br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">If you're thinking of adding video to your photography business or just want a great program to make videos for fun, </span><a href="http://animoto.com/?ref=a_wmjuplzo"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Animoto</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> is the perfect place. </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> Check it out! </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">And be sure to share a link with me if you make your own videos...I want to see them!</span></b></div>way outnumberedhttp://www.blogger.com/profile/11456734293720440275noreply@blogger.com5tag:blogger.com,1999:blog-471159794854482805.post-17001104991265618512011-04-29T14:26:00.000-04:002011-04-29T14:26:07.104-04:00Behind The Scenes Newborn Baby Zara<div dir="ltr" style="text-align: left;" trbidi="on"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So I had the </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Ultimate Extreme Pleasure </span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">of being with my </span><a href="http://www.way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/2011/02/anatomy-lessonsharon-in-snow.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">*bff*</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> last week during the birth of her second child ~ Zara. Isn't that the coolest name!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">And even though I was super excited for Sharon, I have to be honest, I was more excited for me that I had a newborn to photograph! I've never done an "official" newborn session before but I've been blog stalking some sites lately and studying posing and props so I've been waiting for this gal for a while so I could try out all my newfound knowledge. Well let me warn you....</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">IT'S HARD! </span></i><br />
<i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span></i><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Yes, babies are bendable and are supposed to sleep thru anything during those first days of life but my experience wasn't all smooth sailing~ No matter how hard I tried she kept curling her fingers and I couldn't get those knees to bend for anything! But in between the feedings and cranky faces she posed like a dream and now I'm </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">positively in love</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> with newborn photography. And with Zara. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Here's some lovliness...just 6 days </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">new</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">~</span><br />

That pretty much says it all~</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">But I've come to realize that if I actually want to create all these dramatic, awesome portrait ideas that I have spinning around in my brain, I'm going to have to learn to be in control of the light. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So a few months ago I bought an inexpensive light set with 2 softboxes and a kicker light. {</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I love saying "kicker light" it just sounds fun!</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">} </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I've been experimenting with them occasionally but decided to do an "</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">official, for real</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">" photo shoot with Princess. I had a specific look in mind for these portraits and my goal was to actually create the images I had in my brain. </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I'll be sharing more about my set-up on the </span><a href="http://www.texaschicksblogsandpics.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Texas Chicks</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> blog soon, but today I wanted to share a quick Anatomy Lesson on one of my favorite edits from the session.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I opened my original image in Photoshop Elements 6 for Mac...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3c8X9QYbb35rQbAxNt0F_DtVthCOFLeynNaIzaJ4hcIVQR6h5MXYm1iJ7JgicAqROhbvTI9zsnxXXMbnwib6TRd5P8URwscxRjjYM6nVwViZFph2InXH0AwW8NnNRLhUi-lggj-Uef8Y0/s1600/original+veiled+princess.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEh3c8X9QYbb35rQbAxNt0F_DtVthCOFLeynNaIzaJ4hcIVQR6h5MXYm1iJ7JgicAqROhbvTI9zsnxXXMbnwib6TRd5P8URwscxRjjYM6nVwViZFph2InXH0AwW8NnNRLhUi-lggj-Uef8Y0/s1600/original+veiled+princess.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">I loved the </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">soft</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> yet </span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">intense</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> expression on Princess but I was really back & forth on how to edit and crop it.</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">The composition just wasn't doing it for me but I couldn't decide what to keep and what to trash~ I liked the black space on the right....I liked the curve and the bokeh of the chair at the top and I liked the mix of the cream/white/black colors. Ultimately, I decided that the focus should be on </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">her</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> and I didn't want the chair distracting from that so I cropped in real close...</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">as usual</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">!</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Her skin looked great {</span><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">6 year old skin is always great!</span></i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">} but the corner of her left eye and the corner of her mouth was too dark so I wanted to lighten those. I used the </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Clone Tool</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> with the mode set to </span><b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Lighten at 23%</span></b><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivr_rgBlepwAX6MQ1z2M6rsY6ZSg6Xuug61hsLjs_po1c8d-11ws9WX4KifjsIEqpDNPvPWTg44OSCPY3e3wcZUVmLirgZ8-M4EPbeXEZrEQciHTlj7ISH65bnlKtCOF39CfgVHpY3m8_r/s1600/cloning+screenshot.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEivr_rgBlepwAX6MQ1z2M6rsY6ZSg6Xuug61hsLjs_po1c8d-11ws9WX4KifjsIEqpDNPvPWTg44OSCPY3e3wcZUVmLirgZ8-M4EPbeXEZrEQciHTlj7ISH65bnlKtCOF39CfgVHpY3m8_r/s1600/cloning+screenshot.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">*Sidenote ~ I just started using the Pencil Tool and I love it! I totally stink at it but it's so fun! I used it to circle the Mode & Opacity at the top~</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Next I softened the skin just a tiny bit with </span><a href="http://www.thecoffeeshopblog.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Baby Powder Room</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> </span></span><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">then I was ready to decide on the final processing. And guess what....I couldn't decide! So I tried 2 different versions...</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">For the first one, I really wanted to keep that great mix of color tones so I simply ran the </span><a href="http://www.thecoffeeshopblog.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">Velvet Truffle</span></span></a><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"> action from Coffeeshop and adjusted the Color Fill 2 layer to 25% instead of the default 75% opacity.</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSTmjZhjUT53DEbiQbwX38IOxX8vInj2O56xRN5yTjnQ_e4YAKnbi4QBdbYHPdRzlsj4CKwPJjY65iT5VEOwyIygku8DROmWhMFZHt5zOQHpZTY-TfKn9JX7_uRZ8ThMT2rMH7fAXBZuAA/s1600/velvet+truffle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgSTmjZhjUT53DEbiQbwX38IOxX8vInj2O56xRN5yTjnQ_e4YAKnbi4QBdbYHPdRzlsj4CKwPJjY65iT5VEOwyIygku8DROmWhMFZHt5zOQHpZTY-TfKn9JX7_uRZ8ThMT2rMH7fAXBZuAA/s1600/velvet+truffle.jpg" /></span></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">That's the wonderful thing about actions....most of them are adjustable so you can really make them fit to your style. Don't be afraid to play with opacities, turning off layers, and combining one action over another. You never know what you'll end up loving~</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">So here's my final in version #1...</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijRthPnvp7cMCYQLwffKYiCMgBdspVH__ooPvvkCQbN4sDHGV6dFcgFWJTLlEtRMUTUlcGAMAm8AooEKJ1Ft12dsgrGPSlzHCh83BnzvP0NWjBSKBj3N49HSQvtofAw9yZMGSyHz9k8ZHO/s1600/final+velvet+truffle.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="482" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEijRthPnvp7cMCYQLwffKYiCMgBdspVH__ooPvvkCQbN4sDHGV6dFcgFWJTLlEtRMUTUlcGAMAm8AooEKJ1Ft12dsgrGPSlzHCh83BnzvP0NWjBSKBj3N49HSQvtofAw9yZMGSyHz9k8ZHO/s640/final+velvet+truffle.jpg" width="640" /></a></div><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />
</span><br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">*I just love her*</span></i></div><i><span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />

Studio lighting <i>terrifies</i> and <i>intimidates</i> me but I know I MUST learn it if I want more control over my portraits. So I've been using everyone I can to practice on before I actually have a <i>real</i> client that expects me to create something marvelous~<br />
<br />
Back to my story....<a href="http://over40makeupjunkie.blogspot.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Raindog</span></a> and <a href="http://teresanapier.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Queenie</span></a> come over and we all have different agendas...<br />
Raindog is currently studying to be a professional make-up artist so she was happy to have some models to practice on too. {and I totally stink at eyeliner so I was thrilled not to have to do my own makeup!} <br />
Queenie was in need of some new headshots for her Image Consulting business and is always a willing volunteer when free photos are included. <br />
<br />
We spent the morning as all professional, serious models do ~ we played! My house was a mess of make-up, hot rollers, and a tiny dog desperately wanting to be included in the photo shoot. And just for the record, my experience with the hot rollers was <i>not pretty</i>! I ended up with <b>poufy princess hair</b> that Raindog immediately sprayed with concrete so I couldn't change it. Friends do not let friends pose with princess hair but I was outvoted~<br />
<br />
Here's how my lighting was set-up...I had 1 softbox aimed at the left side of the models for side lighting and a reflector in front of it to soften the light a little bit more. My room is huge and I had other lighting coming in from all different areas so it was <i>really really</i> hard for me to get the lighting just right. <br />
<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJN65zrY5nJpSpvl7s1c2xLtCYQD8rERgBUDvNqKGW3PTRwz0oiHoPwPTJcHMPerCH2CNPvFzgsfoUC-CkS2uyrTDNq3BKs2MZDFz0GhVrhybM7PZUijz3f4vUR0DZFE6tKDykHDFvTXHJ/s1600/fb+light+setup.jpg" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEjJN65zrY5nJpSpvl7s1c2xLtCYQD8rERgBUDvNqKGW3PTRwz0oiHoPwPTJcHMPerCH2CNPvFzgsfoUC-CkS2uyrTDNq3BKs2MZDFz0GhVrhybM7PZUijz3f4vUR0DZFE6tKDykHDFvTXHJ/s1600/fb+light+setup.jpg" /></a></div><br />
I was hoping to get a really dramatic, intimate portrait of the 3 of us together {inspired by the awesome <a href="http://www.inbedwithsue.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Sue Bryce</span></a>} but after about 53 attempts of me setting the self timer....then running to pose....then running back to check it....then realizing we're way too dorky to model dramatically...then trying again....I gave up!<br />
<br />
But, the day wasn't an entire waste. After all, when you spend a day with great friends, laughing loudly and playing with make-up, we ended up with memories that are priceless~ And I learned that lighting 3 people is a skill that I just haven't mastered yet. <i>But it's coming....</i><br />
<i><br />
</i><br />
Here's a few shots from the day...<br />

<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;">One of the awesome things that I've learned the past year is how valuable it is to connect with other photographers. My cyberspace photog friend Amy invited me to be part of a photographers forum and I can't express how much I've learned by participating in conversations with other photogs all over the country...and the world! </span><br />
<span class="Apple-style-span" style="font-family: Georgia, 'Times New Roman', serif;"><br />

my <a href="http://www.way-outnumbered.blogspot.com/p/more-sites-worth-stalking.html"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Sites Worth Stalking</span></a> in a while. Sorry 'bout that!<br />
<br />
But here's the good news....everyone on my Sites Worth Stalking page remains solid in their *fabulousness* standing! And even better news, I've added some more absolutely incredible sites<br />
that I firmly believe you all should be stalking each and every day. <br />
<br />
For instance....<a href="http://over40makeupjunkie.blogspot.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Confessions of an Over 40 Makeup Junkie</span></a>....the title alone tells ya it's gonna be good, I mean who doesn't love to hear confessions? It has nothing to do with photography and everything to do with FUN! Plus I hear she's got an awesome giveaway coming this week...Rainee Rae is what you call a <i>hard-core shopper</i> so I'm sure she's got something awesome for that....check it out:)<br />
<br />
Plus she has pictures on her blog like this...<br />
<div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: center;"><a href="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb-v3dLUhFnN32AK148ZaMKfkMyacZ_3NA6-fSKqvb4EDX1jC5-0OiY-YaGYlrth2OEV5OJHcn3sizvtpWonK_GNKa3bQIfg9W21WN1_aU1v_kY2ipmZraJwjBh4hXhxZoJb6yeWDby5bi/s1600/Screen+shot+2011-03-14+at+5.40.15+PM.png" imageanchor="1" style="margin-left: 1em; margin-right: 1em;"><img border="0" height="400" src="https://blogger.googleusercontent.com/img/b/R29vZ2xl/AVvXsEgb-v3dLUhFnN32AK148ZaMKfkMyacZ_3NA6-fSKqvb4EDX1jC5-0OiY-YaGYlrth2OEV5OJHcn3sizvtpWonK_GNKa3bQIfg9W21WN1_aU1v_kY2ipmZraJwjBh4hXhxZoJb6yeWDby5bi/s400/Screen+shot+2011-03-14+at+5.40.15+PM.png" width="293" /></a></div><div class="separator" style="clear: both; text-align: left;">...that are actually relevant to her content!!</div><br />
<br />
Another good one is <a href="http://www.go4prophotos.com/"><span class="Apple-style-span" style="color: magenta;">Go 4 Pro</span></a>...quite inspirational and full of ideas and encouragement if you're...how can I say it....."<i>going for pro</i>"!<br />
<br />
These are just a few...check them all out and soak in the goodness of blog stalking. And please....please...pretty please...share with me your favorite blogs to stalk! I've got about 13 minutes<br />
of my day where I have <i><b>absolutely nothing at all to do</b></i>!!! I need more blogs to stalk!<br />
